My Maria Line Dance Lesson and DEMO

Taught by Urban Cowboy Line Dancing
We did not make this video — we found the clearest one and linked it. There is no single official version of most line dances, so we are filming the version taught on West Michigan floors with local instructors. Teach it here?

Why this one is in the library

A long-standing fixture on popular-dance lists.

The cheat sheet

What you are walking into

Brooks & Dunn again, and the floor fills without anyone asking. Bright and quick.

What catches people out

The tempo is brisker than it sounds. People who learned it slowly get caught out live.

How to get through it

Practise the tutorial at normal speed at least once before the night.

These are ours, written for someone who has not danced it yet — not a step sheet. For exact counts, see the choreographer's sheet linked above, or come to a night and let someone teach you.

How it goes

32 counts · 4 walls · Improver

Choreographed in 1996 and still in rotation. Brisker than it sounds on video.

1–8

Rock and shuffle, both ways

Rock forward on your left, recover, then shuffle backwards left-right-left. Rock back on the right, recover, shuffle forward right-left-right.

9–16

Pivot, hook, shuffle, twice

Step forward left and pivot a half right, hooking your right heel across your shin. Shuffle forward. Do the whole thing again — you end up back where you started.

17–24

Chassé with claps, then a quarter

Step left and hold with a clap, close, step left, touch and clap. Step right, cross your left behind, then shuffle right turning a quarter.

25–32

Turns and home

Step forward left and pivot a half right. Shuffle through a half turn. Rock back right, recover, and shuffle forward.

Written in our own words from the most-voted step sheet, so you can read it before you go. It is not the choreographer’s own notation — for that, see their sheet. Most of these dances have several versions; your room may do a different one.

Go dance this week

We do not claim to know which night plays which song. What we do know is where country dancing happens — here are three of the region's nights, and the calendar has the rest.
