Line Dancing Etiquette: What Nobody Tells You

The floor has a few unwritten rules. None of them are strict, but knowing them makes your first night easier and makes you look like you have been before.

Beginners go in front

Counterintuitive, but the front rows are where you can see the instructor and the people who know the dance. Regulars will make room.

Do not stand still on the floor

If you are sitting a dance out, step off the floor. Standing in a line dance formation blocks a lane.

Ask before you film someone

Everyone films the floor and that is normal. Filming one person up close is not.

Partner dances have a lane

During two-step and swing, couples travel counterclockwise around the outside. Line dancers stay in the middle.

Say yes to the rotation

If an instructor rotates partners, rotate. It is how the room mixes and it is how you meet people.

Ready to go?

There is country dancing somewhere in West Michigan almost every night of the week, and most of it is free.
