Brand New

Start here.
Five moves, three dances.

You do not need to learn everything before your first night. Learn these five moves and these three dances and you will get through most of a country floor. Everything else builds on them.

The five moves

Nearly every line dance is stitched together from these. Learn them once and step guides stop looking like a foreign language.

1

Grapevine

Four counts that carry you sideways.

2

Rock Step

Two counts that go nowhere on purpose — you shift weight and come back.

3

Shuffle

Three quick steps squeezed into two counts. The engine of most dances.

4

Kick Ball Change

A kick, then a fast weight swap on the balls of your feet.

5

Heel Dig

Tap a heel out in front. No weight goes on it.

The three dances

All three are absolute-beginner, and all three get played constantly. Copperhead Road looks intimidating and is not — its own choreographer rates it the easiest level there is.

1

Copperhead Road

The one everybody knows. If you learn one dance first, make it this one.

2

Cupid Shuffle

The dance that calls its own steps. Nobody has an excuse.

3

Wagon Wheel

Everyone sings it. Most rooms dance it too.

Then what?
