How to Line Dance: A Beginner's Guide

Line dancing is a group dance where everyone faces the same direction and does the same steps at the same time. No partner, no lead, no follow. You learn a short sequence, it repeats, and the whole room does it together.

You do not need a partner

That is the entire point of line dancing. Everyone dances the same steps facing the same way. You can arrive alone and never once need someone to dance with.

Start with the four-count basics

Almost every line dance is built from a handful of moves: the grapevine, the step-touch, the kick-ball-change, and the pivot turn. Learn those four and you can follow most beginner dances.

Stand in the middle, not the back

The back row feels safer but you cannot see. Put yourself behind someone who clearly knows the dance and copy them.

Expect to be lost for one song

Everyone is. The dance repeats every 32 or 64 counts, so you get another attempt every thirty seconds.

Go where there is a lesson

Most West Michigan country nights teach a dance before open dancing. Show up for that.
